Wilhelmine Reichard (1788-1848) was the first German balloonist. Between 1811 and 1820 she ventured 17 rides. Every climb was an adventure. The interest of the population in a start at that time was huge, all the more so if a woman rose with it.

Born in Brunswick Johanne Wilhelmine Siegmundine Reichard (1788-1848) was the first balloonist in Germany. As the wife of the physicist Johann Carl Gottfried Reichard, she assisted her husband in his scientific experiments and, in connection with atmospheric measurements, was able to go on a balloon flight. In 1811 she rose in Berlin as the first woman in Germany with a balloon. In the same year she crashed after reaching the record height of 7800 m and survived only miraculously, which did not prevent her to continue her ballooning after a multi-year break enforced by political events. Between 1816 and 1820 Wilhelmine Reichard undertook balloon launches in many cities, which were pursued by a large, paying crowd. After her last start in Munich in 1820, Gottfried Reichard founded a chemical factory in Döhlen near Freital in Saxony, to which Wilhelmine made a substantial financial contribution with her balloon rides. Wilhelmine Reichard completed a total of 17 trips. From the 4 ride she used the same balloon, which is also shown as a model. The cardboard model is based on a picture from Klosterneuburg Abbey near Vienna.
